I thought the rating scales
were an interesting concept to read this week. Rating scales helps the
observers and the members of the group to comments, which are translated in
some definable measure. In a rating scale, there are specific questions asked
that can be answer with a simple checkmark on a 7-1 scale. I recall using the
rating scales ever since I was in middle school. We normally use this when we
had to rate our group members’ performance. I did not like this rating scale
because at that time I thought it was not beneficial and that this can be
manipulated to make one’s grades higher or lower.
A couple years later I
realized that this is very important to evaluate a group performance. It is
actually very effective because it evaluates with a score. This rating scale
can also be applied and very common with surveys. I also think that rating
scales are an easy way to give feedback.
Hi Cyyntthhia, I decided to respond to your point because you did a great job and I agreed with a lot of what you said. A rating scale can be used to get answers to specific questions that a person is looking for. It can be extremely helpful in the work place, school, or even with members belonging to groups such as “book clubs.” Rating scales not only provide the person administering them with insightful data, but it also allows the people providing the data with anonymity. At times an employee might not feel comfortable telling their boss that they think things are going well, but form that allows for a rating scale to be used can fix that apprehension.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Cyyntthhia :)
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post and the personal example you provided. The rating scale is very effective and a positive way to evaluate a group and individual behavior. I have taken a few speech classes and other courses that have used this same tool to direct progress. I agree with your statement that the rating scale is an easy way to provide feedback, I also think it can be less harsh than some verbal feedback, especially if given privately. I had benefitted from many forms of feedback and feel comfortable giving a rating scale. Thanks for the post!
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI believe rating scales are important in group assignments. There are people who will not contribute the same amount of energy other group members will share. Having the rating scale should improve the members’ productivity for upcoming projects. Moreover, if the person were to join the same group, he or she will be prepared. Nowadays, we cannot commit 100% for a group projects, help is mandatory. Each person will contribute ways to complete an assignment. Taking over someone’s slake should not be acceptable. Using a rating scale is better than kicking them off the team. Knock on wood, group projects can backfire and the person doing the least amount of work usually completes it.
